"the mother architecture now establishes the associative link to the ‘oceanic feeling’ of the all-connected and all-encompassing. floor, wall, and ceiling, the structural equivalents of orthogonal three-dimensionality, are transformed into an amorphous shell, and the enclosed space becomes volume. could it be that the spirit of modernism is materializing less in a seemingly decorless rationalism of steel, glass, and concrete, and instead revealing itself in a new, elastic body-oriented approach?“ kay von keitz – ‘soft modernism’ / about the work of gabi schillig, 2025

In her work, Gabi Schillig experimentally explores space and architecture as extensions of the living body—as responsive, dynamic mediums of communication. space is not static or immobile, but alive and evolving, deeply interwoven with human presence and bodily experience. bodies, spaces, and actions are not distinct entities, but mutually dependent and intimately connected. Her work centers on the creation of soft, ephemeral architectures— textile shells, spatial structures, skins, and sometimes almost immaterial membranes—that challenge rigid spatial boundaries. these soft architectures act as spatial mediators, transforming inside and outside into fluid, permeable zones. They invite tactile and embodied dialogues, enabling new ways of being in space – from digital imaginary drawings, photography, spatial installation, performance, videos and woven textiles. Softness is a powerful spatial, material and social concept. It allows for adaptability, malleability, and resonance. It embodies fragility, fluidity, and even instability—but within these qualities lies a deep transformative potential: if something is soft it remains open to change. In times of global crisis, where hardness dominates political, social, and ecological realities, she sees softness as a methodology of transformation—an ethics of care and co-existence. Her work seeks to create soft spatialities: open, protective environments that foster intimacy, tenderness, and mutual awareness between humans, space and other forms of life.

Panorama Waidmarkt Köln | Bodies, Spaces, Atmospheres | Dialog with Kay von Keitz

Panorama Waidmarkt / Panorama-Pavillon am Ort des Archiveinsturzes
Waidmarkt, Köln / 4. Mai – 29. Juni 2025

What Is The First Image You Remember | Collective Exhibition

In 'What Is the First Image You Remember', artists are invited to revisit the earliest images that stayed with them — fragments of memory, first impressions, and private landscapes where seeing and remembering are one. The exhibition explores how the first visual experiences continue to echo through personal narratives and creative expression. Visitors will encounter diverse interpretations, each offering a glimpse into the fragile beginnings of visual memory.

「What Is the First Image You Remember」

supergraphics – experimental laboratory

28.4. – 9.5.2025
mt supergraphics festival
at aedes metropolitan laboratory, berlin

the term ‘supergraphics’ originates from the architecture and design movement of the 1960s and 1970s and refers to a visual design practice in which large-scale, often geometric or typographic graphics were applied to architecture and the interiors and exteriors of buildings. the aim was to use colour, pattern, scale and typography to make static spaces more dynamic and change the perception of architecture and space. spatial boundaries are dissolved by extending graphics across walls, floors, ceilings and other architectural elements, blurring the lines between architecture and graphic design and to transform spaces through movement & bodily experiences. the term ‘supergraphics’ was first used by the american architectural historian c. ray smith. supergraphics not only influenced architecture and interior design, but also fashion, product and graphic design. today, the principles of supergraphics  can be found in many areas of art and design, such as in urban design, spatial design and graphic design.

raumklasse will take the mt supergraphics festival at aedes metropolitan laboratory as an initial starting point to experiment with mt washi tape as graphic and spatial material. the experimentation will continue as semester project and result in a large scale spatial installation which will be presented and exhibited during udk rundgang from july 18 – 20, 2025 at udk medienhaus.

Bezalel Academy of Arts Jerusalem | Artificial Landscapes | Exhibition

'The exhibition Artificial Landscapes will explore the ways urbanization, construction, and technology are transforming natural spaces into new, human-made environments. This exhibition will look at the relationship between architecture, sculpture, and technology, examining how human intervention creates environments that mimic the aesthetics of nature but remain entirely artificial. It will investigate how architecture and sculpture influence one another, balancing functionality with freedom and reflect on the tension between organic forms and the structured, sometimes detached processes of advanced technology. The works will be generated through contemporary tools like parametric design, AI, and ceramic 3D printing.

Curated by Martin Melioranski (EKA Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn) and Sasha Serber (Bezalel Academy of Art, Jerusalem). The exhibition will be presented at the Vitrina of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, Israel.

Opening on April 02, 2025

OAG Deutsche Gesellschaft für Natur- und Völkerkunde Ostasiens | Tokyo, Japan | Talk about 'kiwa' きわ(際)in dialog with the exhibition of Tomoko Mukai

Gabi got invited to enter a dialog "on soft boundaries" – やわらかな境界 with Tomoko Mukai´s exhibition on the notion of "kiwa" きわ(際) (spatial edge or boundary), taking place on March 19, 2025 at the OAG Deutsche Gesellschaft für Natur- und Völkerkunde Ostasiens / オーアーゲー・ドイツ東洋文化研究協会 in Tokyo Japan.

(Text_ Tomoko Mukai / OAG)
